I graduated with the Doctor of Music in guitar performance from Florida State University in December of 2021. After graduating I was delighted to begin teaching a course called Understanding Music. I am glad to be practicing more and hope to do more guitar posts in the future.
Well, I have had to reschedule my recital. I just can’t believe how long the Hurricane Michael recovery process is taking, and how much it has delayed for me, tiring.
My recital is now scheduled for March 7, at 7:30 in Tallahassee. Dress rehearsal March 2. I’m on video 66 of 100 in my # 100daysofpractice goal. Sharing a video below. https://dsdsguitar.tumblr.com/post/190209003993/65-minuetto-by-tarrega-this-is-my-first-time It’s been 408 days since Hurricane Michael severely damaged my home. Still not able to fully function in the house. I’ve postponed my final doctoral recital to January 31st in the Lindsay Recital Hall at FSU. 7:30 pm
I deeply hope that things will get somewhat normal again, soon. Practice updates can be found in this link: https://dsdsguitar.tumblr.com/post/189223190104/39-believe-it-or-not-this-is-one-of-the I have been able to devote 3 hours a day to learning the guitar. Each day starts with scales. I begin with a chromatic scales on the third string, then move to practicing slurs in every major scale beginning with E-flat major and working my way downwards to E. I often do the slurs in an ascending improvised manner. Then I practice Segovia scales: c#-minor, C major, b-minor, G Major, f#-minor, F major, e-minor, and finally E Major. After that I focus on various other technical exercises and repertoire.
It is good to get practice. I am practicing more and feeling better about all things guitar-related, but I still get anxious and worried about how to proceed after being disrupted for a while. I’ll try not to worry too much.I actually got decent practice yesterday. Something weird happened to my left arm and I can’t raise it very far, but thus does not affect my guitar abilities. Just watching out for that.
I have been practicing a little more. A lot of my time still goes to Hurricane Michael Recovery , but I am getting some practice which is much welcomed. Hopefully I will feel well enough to start making videos again.
I also created a new Tumblr, because some weird stuff started happening with my old one. I’ll try to start blogging here and on my Tumblr more often now. I recently discovered that if that nail glue is old, it can goop up the ping pong ball. Usually the glue I use does pretty well, but it was old and ruined my ping pong ball once I attached it to my thumb nail.
Aside from that, I have not been able to practice much lately. The house is getting close to being ready for repair. Moving out, cleaning, etc., takes up a good part of my day. Looking forward to it getting fixed. https://davidstringerguitar.tumblr.com/post/184887122224/day-14-of-100-days-of-practice-excerpt-from
The link above will take you to a recording I posted to my Tumblr blog. It’s an excerpt from Harold Blanchard’s Innocent Meandering. Worked outside a lot today. Finally replaced a shed that Hurricane Michael blew away 216 days. That is the first major repair that has been done to this property (which I call home) since the hurricane made landfall. The above comment is not meant as a complaint, but just a document of how devastating that storm has been. We are very grateful for the help from friends, family, neighbors, and volunteers who have helped with food, debris cleaning, etc, along the way. We’re still making use of a bucket of supplies that was left from the LDS when they came and cleared debris one Saturday while I was in a lesson a two-hour drive away in Tallahassee. The driver who delivered and set up the shed (leveling) today said he wasn’t used to having help... :) I was proud we got to help do something to improve this property. Didn’t get to start practicing until later this evening. Knowing that I have to make a video helps me get focused for practice, especially when I get a late start. |
